Barcelona president claims that Lionel Messi is not for sale

1New Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has insisted that Lionel Messi is not for sale and will negotiate a new deal with the club.

Messi’s future has been the subject of intense speculation this week, with rumours suggesting that Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain are considering a bid for the Argentina attacker, whose contract at the Camp Nou expires in June 2018.

“We have no intention of selling Leo. I can guarantee Messi’ s continuity for this season and for the coming seasons,” he said, while praising Luis Enrique.

“He is doing a good job and I am very happy, the team is improving all of the time,” Bartomeu, who will stand for re-election as club president in the summer, said.

Barcelona have the current handicap of being unable to buy players this month or in the summer as the result of a FIFA ban imposed over irregularities regarding the signing of players for the club’s youth system.

“There are people responsible for that who are no longer at the club,” said Bartomeu, who believes the rules over signing youngsters from foreign countries should be changed.

“It is not possible that we can’ t bring in players because their parents cannot travel with them,” he said.

Lionel Messi continue blossoming in New year

Barcelona appear to have put their rough patch behind them in January. It is all smiles and goals, lots of goals, especially for Lionel Messi, who has engorged his goalscoring haul and, more importantly, significantly clawed back the gaping chasm which lay between him and Cristiano Ronaldo going into the winter break. The Argentinean has now netted 21 to Ronaldo’s 28.

It has not been a case of the Portuguese striker hitting a dry spell – he has scored three goals so far in 2015, but the frightening rate at which he was knocking them in at the beginning of the season has slowed somewhat. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s faltering and the lack of goals from their talisman were starting to take a toll on Luis Enrique’s side, culminating with the embarrassment at Anoeta. However, since that fateful evening, Messi has scored for the ‘Azulgranas’ in every league match, making for a total of six goals – three more than the current top scorer in the division over the same period.

Neymar has also catapulted himself into the fight to be crowned Spain’s top scorer. Although he is still some way off the pace, he is driving hard, hand-in-hand with Messi, in a bid to finish the campaign ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

At the other end of the field, we would be remiss not to mention the contributions of Claudio Bravo. Not only are Barcelona hitting hard up front, but they are showing great solidity at the back, with the Chilean shot-stopper having conceded less than 10 goals in La Liga (9 to be precise).

Barcelona beats Elche on Saturday

1Barcelona are having their way with Elche on Saturday, after their rivals Real Madrid struggled through a clash with Cordoba that saw Cristiano Ronaldo get sent off with a red card.

Thanks to goals from some of their biggest names, like Gerard Pique, Lionel Messi and Neymar, Barcelona took a 3-0 lead. Late int he second half, Neymar scored his second goal of the game to extend the lead to a dominant 4-0, and this was no routine goal.

Barcelona’s first goal scored by Pique in the 35 minute from an astute move by Xavi, changed the game completely. From that point on, Barca were able to build on that lead comfortably. The many goals that followed were a clear reflection of the vast difference in terms of budget and quality between both clubs.

The Catalan club’s third consecutive victory in the domestic league helps them keep the pressure firmly on current leaders Real Madrid. While the difference is still one point despite Los Blancos having played one fewer game, Barcelona’s fans hope that their team’s current streak will help them climb to the top of the table sooner rather than later.

Messi proves himself by action

Lonel Messi scored a brilliant hat-trick as Barcelona sealed a comfortable 4-0 win over Deportivo on Sunday. Messi followed up a brilliant showing in last weekend’s 3-1 La Liga win at home to champions Atletico Madrid with a hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Deportivo La Coruna which kept Barca hard on the heels of leaders Real Madrid.

messiReports have been swirling about a rift between Messi and Luis Enrique, with the four-times World Player of the Year apparently unhappy with the Barca coach’s management style and tactics and said to be seeking an exit from the club he joined at the age of 13.

Messi responded by saying he was not thinking of leaving but he has not explicitly denied claims his relationship with Luis Enrique has broken down.

Whatever the reality of the situation, if Messi continues his prolific scoring form Barca will have a good chance of returning to winning ways this term after failing to win major silverware in 2013-14 for the first time in six years.

“He has been playing at a phenomenal level the whole season,” Luis Enrique told a news conference on Sunday.

“He has not dropped off at any moment” added the former Barca and Spain midfielder, who took over from Messi’s compatriot Gerardo Martino at the end of last season.

Messi’s treble was his 22nd in La Liga, one fewer than Real Madrid’s Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who beat Messi into second place to win a third FIFA Ballon d’Or award on Monday.

Messi, voted the world’s best player four times between 2009 and 2012, has hit 30 hat-tricks for Barca in all competitions and three for Argentina.

Real, who have a game in hand, top La Liga on 45 points at the halfway point of the season, with Barca second on 44 and Atletico third on 41.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a Messi fan

Cristiano Ronaldo’s said they met up with the Argentina captain at the Ballon D’Or ceremony in Zurich on Monday. His son Cris junior is a Lionel Messi fan.

After Ronaldo was named 2014 Ballon D’Or winner, beating four-time winner Messi into second place, the two players had a friendly exchange in the lobby of Zurich’s Kongresshaus when Cris pointed at Messi and then stood up to greet him.

Real Madrid’s Portugal captain Ronaldo told his arch-rival Messi: “He watches a video on the internet of all of us and he talks about you,” prompting a coy reaction from his son.

Barcelona forward Messi chuckled and asked the young Cristiano how he was doing.

“You are embarrassed now!” Ronaldo then laughed to his son.

Ronaldo received his third Ballon D’Or on Monday with the Portuguese or Messi having won the award every year since 2008.

What?Messi a bigger genius than Ronaldo? What are Capello talking about?

The Russia coach has voiced his admiration for the Argentine attacker, but believes the Madrid man could surpass him due to his problems at club level.

Fabio Capello says Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is a bigger genius than Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo, but believes the Argentine’s difficulties at the Camp Nou side could prove to be a problem in the years to come.

The Portugal star scooped up his third Ballon d’Or at the annual Fifa gala in Zurich on Monday and Capello refuses to rule out the possibility that the 29-year-old will eventually win the prestigious individual award more than his Barcelona nemesis, who lifted it four times in a row.

“Can Ronaldo win more Ballons d’Or than Messi? It’s a very interesting battle. Messi is a bigger genius than Ronaldo, but he is having some problems at his club and that could cause some problems,” Capello toldCOPE.

“Cristiano is very solid and mentally very strong. He wants to become the best ever and plays in an amazing team.

“All his team-mates help him and he in turn helps out the team as well. It’s crucial to have the respect of all your team-mates and to always train well.”

Capello then went on to discuss the future of Messi at Barcelona. The attacker’s future has become the subject of much speculation this season, but the Russia coach feels a transfer is out of the question.

“Barcelona should never sell Messi. How can you sell someone like Messi?

“I saw him play at the weekend. He didn’t have a good start and did not seem to be enjoying himself. And then all of a sudden he awoke and put in a superb performance. Barcelona simply cannot sell a player like him.”

Messi has a contract with Barcelona until June 2018.
